Bakari Machumu has been appointed managing director of Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), the leading print media house in Tanzania, a position that he has been holding in an acting capacity for several months.
This is according to a statement of Nation Media Group, the parent firm of MCL, signed by Stephen Gitahama, Group’s chief executive officer.
MCL, publishes Mwananchi, Mwanaspoti, The Citizen newspapers and several digital outlets.
Prior to becoming executive editor in 2012/13, he was managing editor of The Citizen for seven years from 2006.
He joined MCL as the first business editor of The Citizen in 2004. He worked with Business Times Limited as a news editor of the Daily Times, features editor of Business Times and business reporter of the same for six years.
Mr Machumu has spearheaded the digital transformation of MCL making it the first newsroom to embrace convergence in Tanzania in April 2017.
Mr Machumu is the board member of Inter Region Economic Network (IREN) in Kenya; board member of Tanzania Editors’ Forum; board member of Governing Council of Media Council of Tanzania; founding member of the International Press Institute (IPI) Tanzania National Committee (Chapter); member of the Executive Committee of the Parents and Teachers Association of Barbro Johannson Model Girls Secondary School; and chairman of Communication and Transportation Sector Committee of the Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE).
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture General from Sokoine University of Agriculture (1998); Masters of Business Administration from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (Esami, 2018).
He is currently pursuing an Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation (EMMLI), from The Aga Khan University, Graduate School of Media and Communication, Nairobi Campus.He is a Country Winner Titans Outstanding Media Leadership 2014, East Africa Regional Winner, Titans Outstand- ing Media Leadership 2014 and a finalist for the Continental Award
