Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) has embarked on a journey in an endeavor to stimulate national discourse on issues affecting Tanzanians by encouraging dialogue, shaping opinions and policy directions, and practical solutions to key issues that are critical to the development and growth of Tanzania through a Thought Leadership Forum program known as “Mwananchi Jukwaa la Fikra”
MCL, which publishes The Citizen, Mwananchi and Mwanaspoti, held the first Mwananchi Thought Leadership forum on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) as the first discussed topic themed “Our Lifestyle, Our Health”.
It drew stakeholders who included health experts, government officials and ordinary Tanzanians. The forum came up with recommendations on how to address NCDs, which have in recent years become a serious health concern.
It also served as a platform for drawing a roadmap on low-cost solutions and the way forward in controlling NCDs and their risk factors in the country.
Panelists, who have graced the forum included the Minister for Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Hon. Ummy Mwalimu, Chairman of the Diabetes Association of Tanzania and NCDs Alliance, Prof Andrew Swai, and the Director general of NIMR, Prof Yunus Mgaya. Others were Dr. Faraja Chiwanga, an endocrinologist at Muhimbili National Hospital (MEWATA), and Dr. Julius Mwaiselage, Executive Director of the Ocean Road Cancer Institute.
The forum was moderated by Mr. Felix Mlaki and Dr. Blandina Kilama. The partners were Health ministry, ITV/Radio One and World Health Organization. While the sponsors were Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, NMB Bank and Colosseum Fitness Club
